Caucus or vote in the primary.

The Town of Kingston uses a caucus system to select its candidates, rather than direct voting. Subscribe to the ToK Democrats e-mail list to be informed when the caucus will happen!

County, state, and federal candidates are selected with a primary election on June 25.

What is the Petition Process All About?

In order to appear on the General Election ballot for county, state, and federal offices, candidates are required to circulate a petition that must be signed by registered members of the political party that they are seeking to represent. By signing a political petition, you are authorizing that candidate or group of candidates to appear on the ballot for that political contest. This is not an endorsement of the candidate. You are simply giving permission for the candidate to run for an office on the political party line in which you are registered. It is a vital part of the electoral process; if someone comes to your door asking for your signature to get candidates on the ballot, it is legitimate and there is no cause for concern. Petitions are circulated from the end of February until early April.

Anybody registered to vote in New York State as a Democrat can circulate petitions for Democratic candidates. If you’re interested in meeting your Democratic neighbors and want to help get Democrats on the ballot, we want to hear from you!

What About the Working Families Party (WFP)?

The WFP is a progressively minded party; they typically don’t field challengers to Democratic Party candidates, but rather endorse Democratic candidates and ballot measures that meet their criteria for progressive ideals. Although members of the WFP are welcome to vote in the general election, you must be registered as a Democrat to participate in the Democratic caucus or vote in the primary.

Candidates who are endorsed by the WFP will show up on separate ballot lines for both the Democratic Party and the Working Families Party; you may mark your vote on the WFP line if you wish to show your support for that party. Your vote will go to that candidate either way!
